BMW Group has been teasing some exciting information about the upcoming Mini Cooper Electric, set to debut later this year and hit the market in the summer of 2024. But instead of using its usual media channels, the parent company revealed some tantalizing tidbits to British car magazine Autocar. According to Stefanie Wurst, the new Mini boss, the forthcoming Mini Cooper hatchback will form the foundation of a brand-wide transformation.
The refreshed Mini lineup will feature the Aceman, the brand’s very first all-electric model, and a larger Mini Countryman SUV, which will come in both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) versions.
The Mini Cooper Electric will launch in May 2024, bringing the brand’s core model back to its roots for the next generation. Not only will it have a “new” name – officially changing to the Cooper from its current Hardtop or Hatch monikers – but it will also feature a wider track, shorter front overhang, longer wheelbase, and larger wheels. Despite these changes, the new Mini Cooper will retain its current length of 3.8 meters (149.6 inches), giving it a more purposeful stance than the current Mini Hardtop.
By now, you’ve probably heard that the 2024 Mini Cooper Electric will be manufactured in China by BMW Group’s joint venture with Great Wall Motor, known as Spotlight Automotive. The upcoming vehicle will be built on a brand new platform, the Spotlight EV, which was co-developed with the Chinese partner. This platform will be shared with the 2025 Aceman EV crossover, and buyers will have a choice of two battery packs.
The entry-level E model will come with a 40-kilowatt-hour pack (compared to the current model’s 32.6-kWh), while the range-topping SE will have a 54-kWh pack. As a result, the range will increase significantly, according to Wurst. The base range will be 240 miles (WLTP), a huge improvement over the current model’s 145 miles (WLTP).
In addition, the CEO of Mini hinted that there will be other, as-yet-unannounced battery options that will “double what is offered with the same battery sizes now.”
The standard Mini Cooper E will have the same power output as the current model’s electric motor, delivering 181 horsepower, while the Cooper SE will feature a more potent motor rated at 215 hp. Both versions will be front-wheel drive.
