Set to be built on a distinct EV platform separate from the ID.2all, the ID 1 will be even smaller in size. It serves as a spiritual successor to its predecessors, including the VW e-UP, and follows the mantra of simplicity. Volkswagen’s top brass remains resolute in their belief that the ID 1 can be delivered with a price tag below €20,000, all while ensuring a respectable profit margin. Much of this optimism stems from the advancements in battery technology, as the ID 1 will benefit from the remarkable strides made at VW’s Valencia plant. However, while this development is undoubtedly exciting, it also hints at a rather distant time frame. The Valencia plant is slated to commence production of the VW ID 2, Cupra Raval, and a trio of Skoda models around 2025. Consequently, the ID 1 is expected to make its debut in 2026, provided there are no unforeseen delays. Of course, three years is a substantial span, and the sub-€20,000 price point may fall victim to the protracted wait.

Although the ID 1 will be based on a dedicated EV platform, it will share certain components with its forthcoming sibling, the ID 2. For instance, the ID 1 will likely offer the largest battery option available in the ID 2—a 38 kWh battery pack. This setup should provide a minimum range of 322 km, ensuring drivers have ample distance for their urban journeys. To keep costs in check, it is expected that the ID 1 will employ LFP batteries, a strategic choice in the pursuit of affordability.

As Volkswagen sets its sights on the ID 1, it demonstrates their commitment to broadening the electric mobility landscape. With a compact size, budget-friendly pricing, and a focus on urban efficiency, the ID 1 promises to be a charming addition to Volkswagen’s ever-expanding electric family.
