Volkswagen constantly gives the impression that it is about to give a car a mid-cycle facelift or transition it to the next generation because of its extensive lineup. A new Tiguan will be introduced in 2023; however, the compact crossover is currently undergoing cold-weather testing to iron out any kinks before going on sale. Spies came across a prototype that was cleverly disguised and tried to look like the current model but didn’t.

The stickers that can be seen on the car’s headlights and taillights were applied to give the impression that this is just a modern-day Tiguan. The C-shaped accents on the front bumper and the silver strips on the grille serve the same purpose. On the rear bumper and along the bottom of the doors, more of the same fakery can be seen. VW seems to want us to believe that we are looking at an R-Line with its fake quad exhaust, an eHybrid version of the current crossover.

You should notice that the prototype appears to be larger than the Tiguan that we are all familiar with if you ignore the deceptive disguise. Additionally, the boxy shape has been mostly eliminated, and in its place is a more curvaceous appearance similar to that of the pure electric ID.4. It is too early to determine whether VW will produce the vehicle in a single size or produce another Allspace derivative. The fact that this test vehicle has the entire production body suggests that the third-generation model is getting closer.

Although a different prototype with an ID-like touchscreen was captured in September, images of the interior are not included in this set. The infotainment system is no longer neatly integrated into the center console like it was on the current model, but at least it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb from the dashboard’s top. As long as we look at the final layout, we’re fine with this compromise.

The 2024 Tiguan should remain largely unchanged in terms of its foundations, despite the significant interior and exterior design updates planned. As a result of Volkswagen’s focus on electric vehicles, hardware development for combustion-powered automobiles is sluggish. To meet the upcoming Euro 7 regulations, it is anticipated that the new crossover will make use of an evolution of the MQB platform and cleaner gasoline and diesel engines.

Reason tells us that mild-hybrid technology will be used throughout the range, and VW’s engineers probably have found a way to increase the electric range of the plug-in hybrid model. Given that it would clash with the ID.4 and a recently announced high-riding derivative of the ID.3, a pure electric Tiguan makes no sense. A Tiguan with more power has been promised, but it’s not clear if it will be the full-fledged R model.
