Mazda has finally stepped up its game by giving its 2 and CX-3 models a much-needed infotainment overhaul, replacing the outdated system that has been in use for what seems like an eternity. Both the supermini and subcompact crossover are making the transition to a brand-new 8.8-inch infotainment system, complete with a host of connected services. However, it’s worth noting that this system still appears as a standalone tablet perched on the dashboard, rather than seamlessly integrated into the design. While this exciting change is initially set to debut with the 2024MY models in Japan, enthusiasts worldwide are eagerly anticipating its global rollout.
The 2 and CX-3 were among the last holdouts to the previous-generation infotainment setup, a relic still found in the 6 midsize sedan/wagon and the iconic MX-5. Speculation is swirling that the beloved rear-wheel-drive sports car, the MX-5, is on the verge of a facelift (ND3) that might just include this 8.8-inch display as part of its upgraded multimedia system. However, it’s important to note that nothing has been confirmed by Mazda at this juncture.
Previously known as the “Demio” in Japan, the 2024 Mazda2 represents a step back in terms of generation since Mazda has been offering the newer Toyota Yaris-based Mazda2 Hybrid in Europe for some time. This shift to a new infotainment system ensures that the B-segment hatchback will remain relevant for the foreseeable future, even as it approaches its 10th anniversary next year. In addition to the upgraded infotainment, the Mazda2 is also receiving a slew of stylish accents, injecting a fresh breath of life into this familiar face.
The CX-3, on the other hand, has been around since 2024 and although Mazda USA bid it farewell after the 2021MY, it continues to find a home in select markets. This is despite the presence of the CX-30, which has been available since 2019. In its homeland of Japan, the revised CX-3 is poised to receive a special Vivid Monotone edition, boasting cosmetic enhancements and an improved iteration of the 1.8-liter diesel engine.
In the Japanese market, the Mazda2 is set to hit the sales floor in late December, while the CX-3 will make its debut in February 2024. Mazda offers both models with a range of engine options including gasoline and diesel, along with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions, and the flexibility of front- or all-wheel drive configurations.
