The Renault Espace is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion, the French automaker will be releasing a brand new generation model. The sixth-gen Espace will be unveiled this spring and will no longer be a minivan. Renault has released three teaser images and confirmed that the new Espace will now be an SUV.

This shift to an SUV is not unexpected, as the demand for SUVs continues to grow while the MPV segment in European markets shrinks. The new Espace will arrive in a few months, available in both five- and seven-seat versions. Renault has not yet released more details, though we already have some information about the sixth-generation Espace.

Spy photos have previously revealed that the new vehicle will have a design similar to the Renault Austral. Renault has confirmed that the Espace will be built on the CMF-CD platform, which also the foundation of the Austral and other SUVs in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, such as the Nissan X-Trail and Mitsubishi Outlander. This platform was also used in the previous Espace model, which was a traditional minivan.

It is likely that the Espace VI will share the same engine options as the Austral, given their similarities in design and technology. The Austral currently offers a base 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid support, producing a peak output of 130 horsepower (97 kilowatts). This may not be sufficient for the larger and heavier Espace, and we expect the mild-hybrid 1.3-liter four-cylinder with 140 horsepower (104 kW) to be a more popular option. The Austral’s range-topping powertrain is the E-Tech Hybrid, which combines a 1.2-liter engine and an electric motor, producing a system power of up to 200 horsepower (149 kW).
